Alibaba Intensifies AI Push with Open-Source Models and Text-to-Video Tech

Alibaba is planning big in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. It has lately announced the release of new open-source AI models and text-to-video technology. The move signals the commitment of the company to compete in the rapidly growing generative AI sector.

The new models are part of Qwen 2.5 family of Alibaba. It comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 0.5 to 72 billion parameters. The parameters allow the models to excel in various tasks such as mathematics, coding and translation across more than 29 languages. The Thursday’s release is a follow of the initial launch of Qwen 2.5 in May.

Other major AI players like Baidu and OpenAI have adopted closed-source approaches, but Alibaba is opting for a hybrid model as it aims to diversify its offerings and establish a competitive edge.

Alibaba also unveiled a new text-to-video AI tool as part of its Tongyi Wanxiang image generation family. The technology allows users to generate videos from text prompts. The competition in this space is intensifying with major players like OpenAI and ByteDance also exploring similar technologies. ByteDance launched its text-to-video app Jimeng AI in August. It is now available to Chinese users on Apple’s App Store.

The recent advancements of Alibaba come at a time when Chinese tech companies are making significant investments in generative AI. Alibaba aims to strengthen its position in the evolving AI market by combining cutting-edge innovations with open-source development.

The developments reflect the ongoing efforts of Alibaba to leverage AI for growth. The company will now keep pace with global competitors and drive AI adoption across multiple sectors.
